Emily's En-suite

The Challenge: following a life-changing health event, 21-year-old Emily needed her ensuite transformed into a space that worked with her, not against her. The original layout was uninspired and physically restrictive. The goal was to create a high-functioning wet room that accommodated Emily’s wheelchair and provided ample space for her support team, all without sacrificing the vibrant, youthful aesthetic of a woman with a keen eye for design.

The Homebird Approach: this project was a collaboration between technical precision and personal expression. I acted as the bridge between Emily’s vision, her medical requirements, and a very trusted and talented builder.

Inclusive Design: in close consultation with Emily and her carers, I designed a layout that prioritised ease of movement. This included specific height considerations for the vanity unit to ensure wheelchair access and a wide-access shower area that allows for assisted care with dignity.

Banishing the Beige: we moved away from clinical, 'disabled-friendly' palettes. Emily shared her favourite colours, and I curated a selection of bold tiles, contemporary paint shades, and high-end brassware finishes to create a space that feels like a boutique hotel, not a hospital.

Technical Advocacy: I engaged with Emily’s medical team and the builder to navigate the VAT Relief for Disabled People scheme. By ensuring the project met the specific criteria for "VAT-free" accessibility works, we were able to reinvest those savings back into the quality of the finishes.

The Result: a private sanctuary that is as stylish as it is functional. Emily now has an en-suite that reflects her personality and supports her daily routine with ease. It’s a space that celebrates her independence and proves that 'accessible' can, and should, be beautiful.
